Nottingham Trent University Bespoke Totem Design
When Nottingham Trent University sought help in improving campus navigation and upholding brand consistency, we were thrilled to take on the challenge. Our task was to design and create custom totem signs for their prominent city centre building, serving as both informative guides and eye-catching entrance markers. We understood the importance of aligning with existing signage and adhering to brand guidelines, whilst also ensuring the signs were portable and didn't disrupt traffic flow. NTU faced the challenge of improving wayfinding around their city centre campus while maintaining a cohesive visual identity. The lack of signage around the main entrance to the Newton building meant that there was no effective way to guide visitors to the various schools within it, and there was a need for a prominent marker denoting the main entrance.
Additionally, limitations such as underground utilities and protective membranes over the building underground facilities prohibited the use of permanent foundations for the totem signs. Our challenge was to find a solution that would address these issues whilst aligning with NTU's brand guidelines. |

After careful consideration and brainstorming various ideas, we proposed a creative solution to NTU. We created custom-made planters for the totem signs, ensuring they would not interfere with traffic flow and could be easily moved when needed. These planters were designed so that permanent foundations were no longer required – instead the structure is weighed down with small decorative stones which could not be used as a weapon or tool for any vandalism acts.
To maintain brand consistency and make the totem signs visually appealing, we incorporated the trademark NTU shield logos onto the sides of the planters. This cohesive visual language enhances NTU's overall image and creates a sense of unity across their campus. |

Through the creation of the custom totem signs, carefully considering the requirements and adhering to NTU’s vision
and values, we were able to address the challenge and significantly improve campus navigation. Our solution, providing a clear marker for the main entrance and incorporating moveable planters, has successfully enhanced the overall campus experience for students, faculty and visitors. This design allows for flexibility in adapting to the changing needs and events on campus, ensuring that they remain functional and effective in the long-term. |
